The long awaited Killybegs playground was officially opened on Saturday 21st June with Republic of Ireland and Everton football star Seamus Colman performing the official opening in front of a very large crowd. The project which cost in the region of €180K looked fantastic and no doubt will be a tremendous addition to the town.
Speaking at the opening, Thomas Pringle T.D. who acted as MC for the event welcomed all present and paid tribute to those who committed funding in the early planning years and those who contributed to the development of the new Playground”.
Newly elected Councillor Niamh Kennedy, who had played a key role in the projects development, said she was delighted to see the project completed and thanked in particular Donegal Local Development Company and the Leader Programme for contributing 70% of the funding. She also thanked Donegal Council for their contribution of site and helping her committee with their match funding contribution. She said she wished to in particular thank the staff of DLDC and Donegal County Council whom she had worked closely with over the period of planning and construction.
Representing the main funder of the project, John Starrett, Vice Chairperson of Donegal Local Development Company Ltd, said that the aim of the LEADER Programmes is to encourage individuals and community groups to develop innovative enterprises and community facilities throughout Donegal like this one here today. Donegal Local Development Company is always pleased to assist local communities and in particular those who develop capital projects like this. “In approving this project, our Board were delighted to provide LEADER funding of €132,675 and although this provided 70% of the costs, we also must acknowledge the commitment and input from the local committee who provided the remaining match
funding. To-date, Donegal Local Development Company through the Leader Programmes has provided in excess of €23M to some 725 projects in Donegal which in turn has enabled a total of investment of over €55M within the county. On behalf of Donegal Local Development Company, I wish to congratulate the committee on their excellent project and wish them every success with helping to improve the quality of life for the people of the Killybegs area”.
The new Mayor of Donegal John Campbell also spoke at the opening and congratulated all involved. Other speakers including Caoimhin Mc Aoidh, CEO, Donegal Local Development Company and the main man himself Seamus Coleman who performed the cutting of tape just in time to allow hundred of kids enter their fantastic new “PlaySpace” for the first time.
