Seen here is the 2016 Micheal O Cleirigh Summer School Programme. The theme of this year’s School is on the subject of Refugees and Strangers The Irish in Europe 1500 -1800. Most people know that in the aftermath of the Great Famine from 1845 -1849 that over a million people left Ireland moving to Scotland, England, Wales and further to the United States and Canada. However Irish people began leaving Ireland from the 16th Century mainly to continental Europe where their welcome was good if they were soldiers or were merchants but those less well off were considered a burden to the state and to the taxpayer-so many parallels to what is happening in Europe today and one of the events The ‘Hedge School’ hosted by “History Ireland’s” Tommy Graham will delve into the issues.
