Community Based Youth Initiatives

The National Development Plan identifies lack of educational achievement and lack of self-esteem as key factors leading to unemployment crime and social deprivation. The plan further notes that early intervention in the process of addressing disadvantage is essential if these problems are to be avoided and the cycle of disadvantage broken.

This measure focuses on disadvantaged young people and provides for additional or alternative supports within the formal education system and in community settings.

DLDC Strategies

1). Provision of targeted supports to young people (0-12) who experience cumulative disadvantage. This will also include provision of support to Early Years practitioners of disadvantaged young people together with their parents.

Example of actions:

  • Play sessions for parent & todler groups
  • Little Smarties after school project
  • Donegal Travellers project after school club

2). Responding to the needs of Early school leavers/those at risk of early school leaving who have not been targeted by other support services and/or where mainstream provision is inadequate.

Examples of Actions:-

  • ADOPT - Youth Club
  • Education assessments
  • Donegal Travellers Project Youth Clubs
  • Drugs & Alcohol Initiative
